Tinker's Dam

Ian Danielsen

Tinkers Dam
Traditional and contemporary CeltAmericousticana. Tinker's Dam enjoys the challenge of weaving unlikely combinations of Celtic and American music in a way that is as enjoyable as it is unexpected. Multi-dimensional but fun, Tinker's Dam splits the difference between thoughtful arrangement and 'let 'er rip' string band jamming.

Tinker’s Dam blends Irish and Americana standards into a unique aural presentation you’ll not soon forget. Built around Su Tarr’s violin – the Harley Davidson of fiddles, as one fan memorably put it – the quintet also features the tight harmonies of Tarr, guitarist Ian Danielsen and bassist Matt Boon. Mandolinist Doug Austin and guitarist Dave Shiflett round out the act.

Song selections range from traditional jigs and reels to the work of Stephen Foster, Bob Dylan, and contemporary singer/songwriters, often woven into surprising combinations. The band is now in its seventh year.

Ian Danielsen

Ian Danielsen has been performing as a singer since he was ten-years-old. Musical projects have included membership in The Rounders, which he describes as a rich blend of traditional and contemporary string-band music; and the harmony-washed Reedy Creek, also involving Dave Shiflett and Matt Boon of Tinker's Dam. Ian has also tried his hand at songwriting, and has penned several numbers which endeavor to give voice to the experiences of others in a way that only songs can. Ian has found a very comfortable place among his friends and bandmates in Tinker's Dam, as God knows, they are all kindred-spirit junkyard dogs for combining the old with the new.

Su Tarr

Su Tarr has been playing the violin for more than 40 years and is classically trained. In the past 20 years, she has found that her interests/talents are in traditional/folk/historical/celtic music. She has performed with the Richmond Symphony, the Charleston, WVA Symphony, and the Huntington WVA Symphony. She currently can be found playing music in the taverns of Colonial Williamsburg and she performs with the civil war musical interpretive band, Southern Horizon.

Doug Austin

Doug Austin is blessed with the opportunity to make a living playing music. His "day job" consists of playing 17th and 18th century songs and tunes in Colonial Williamsburg. Besides Tinkers Dam, Doug plays in Williamsburg's Runaway String Band, Soy Hero, and sits in with other projects in and around the Richmond area.

Dave Shiflett

Dave Shiflett is a guitarist and songwriter. He also sings a bit. He has released two CDs and one EP of original music with Floor Creak (Time Goes Rushing By) and The Karma Farmers (Songs for Aging Cynics and Quartet). He is also a journalist and author who posts articles and songs at DaveShiflett.com

Matt Boon

Matt Boon has played bass in the Richmond, Virginia area for the last twenty years in groups playing a wide range of musical styles from blues to bluegrass, jazz to classic R&B, and of course celticoustisomething. He is currently learning to play the Irish low whistle.
